Baking lessons: For me Thanksgiving marked baking season, as my Grammy and I embarked on a cookie-baking marathon the weekend after. For three days we would be together in her kitchen with the big table and the walk-in fire place and delightful smells filling the house. I wish I could say what exactly happened during this time….there were Grammy lessons…baking lessons and life lessons. Grammy had all of the time in the world when we baked. No distractions. Joyful! Patient! Unhurried! (Oh, to give my children that much of me without the demands of today bargaining for my attention!)
Grammy had a way of making everyone feel that they were… just as they were… all that mattered. She taught me to trust my instincts when baking…that recipes were suggestions and that the dough would tell us what to do…she taught me to be adventurous and not to fret over a burned batch…she taught me to complete the job without skimping on ingredients and processes... she taught me that if you do something well, then enjoy doing it and share it, for that is a gift that you were meant to give. So that is why every Maggie’s Cookie has a pinch of love, a dash of patience, and a spoonful of gratitude. And a whole cup full of joy!
